In homage to the Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray, 1910–1985
Pauli Murray was a Black, gender-nonconforming civil rights lawyer and California’s first Black deputy attorney general. Murray’s legal scholarship became the backbone of Brown v. Board of Education — Thurgood Marshall called their work the “bible” of the litigation. Murray’s 1965 “Jane Crow” article laid the groundwork for Reed v. Reed, the case that first extended the Equal Protection Clause to women — and Ruth Bader Ginsburg credited Murray as an honorary co-author of the brief.
A co-founder of the National Organization for Women and an LGBTQ+ icon, Murray’s name today graces a Yale residential college and a Sundance-premiered documentary. Pauli Murray saw, decades early, the legal arguments others couldn’t — and wrote them down so the rest of the law could catch up.
